“Oh, You’re a Funeral Director? What Do You Make?”

I’m glad you asked. Per licensed funeral director, Nick Astorino, this is what he, I, and tens of thousands of other funeral directors “make.”

“I make your child presentable after they get killed in a car wreck, or your mother finally look happy and at peace after she fights disease for years as a shell of herself. I make suggestions, decisions and speak on your behalf when you’re so overcome with grief that you can’t even remember your name. I make my family wait to open Christmas presents and eat Thanksgiving dinner because I’m at work helping you. I make every minute of my work a formal occasion by the way I dress, speak and act — and I do that out of respect to you. That’s what I make.”

I’ll never be able to be paid for the time and thanks I do receive. That, to me, is priceless. You couldn’t pay me enough to leave funeral service.
